Evelyn Fort

b. 1895, Oak Park, IL - d. 1997, Elmhurst, IL

Evelyn “Evie” Corlett Fort was born in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park, and attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). Her life and career are not well documented. She belonged to the Chicago Society of Artists and the North Shore Art Association, exhibiting in their shows as well as at the Art Institute of Chicago. Her oil on canvas, Untitled (Mending), shows a carefully rendered domestic scene, conveyed in vibrant colors and strong brushstrokes. Like many Depression-era genre scenes, it pays homage to the integrity of labor—even if “woman’s work.”
